AutumnFest at the Market Returns to Greenville State Farmers Market

GREENVILLE – The South Carolina Department of Agriculture is hosting the 17^th annual AutumnFest at the Market on October 6-7. Event hours are Friday and Saturday from 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. at the Greenville State Farmers Market.

AutumnFest at the Market will have all you need, including seasonal plants, lawn and garden décor, and other horticultural and agricultural products, to get your yard ready for the fall season. Greater Greenville Master Gardeners will also be on-site to answer your gardening questions.

The event will take place rain or shine. Admission and parking for the event are free of charge. Visitors are encouraged to dress comfortably and bring along a wagon so that any purchases can be easily transported to vehicles. COLUMBIA – The South Carolina Department of Agriculture (SCDA) is offering South Carolina residents the opportunity to safely dispose of outdated, unusable, or unwanted pesticides.

The pesticide and chemical program is open only to residents and farmers from any SC County. SCDA staff will be on site to monitor pesticide collection and disposal, and will have final authority on acceptance of products.

• Chemical and pesticide quantities accepted will be limited to 2500 pounds of solid and 300 gallons of liquid at no charge.
• Pesticide products accepted include herbicides, insecticides, nematicides, fungicides, and similar products used in agricultural production or around the home.
• Rinsate will not be accepted.
• Fertilizer will not be accepted unless it is combined or co-packed with a pesticide such as weed and feed.
• No compressed gas cylinders (metal cylinder with a valve) or empty pesticide containers will be collected.
• Collection events may be cancelled due to inclement weather and will be posted on SCDA’s website. Possible makeup dates will be announced at a later date.

Clemson and USC Kick-off Palmetto Series Food Drive to Benefit Harvest Hope and Golden Harvest 

Clemson, South Carolina – Today, the University of South Carolina and Clemson University kicked-off the Certified SC Grown Palmetto Series Food Drive in a coordinated effort to benefit Harvest Hope Food Bank and Golden Harvest Food Bank and tackle hunger within their communities. The winner of this match-up will be announced at the Clemson vs. Carolina football game on November 25.

“It’s always great to see two rivals come together for a common cause in the Palmetto Series. Having a canned food drive as part of the series is a great way to help everyone recognize and meet the needs of the hungry in our state,” said Harvest Hope Food Bank CEO Denise Holland. “Seeing the schools’ appetite for victory turned into a drive to end hunger is a win for everyone involved. I’m excited to see what the students, fans, and teams will do to help their neighbors who struggle with hunger on a daily basis.”

The University that raises the most donations in non-perishable foods by November 20 will earn a point for their school towards the 2017-18 Certified SC Grown Palmetto Series standings. Collected food donations between the two schools will be measured in pounds, and money donated will be converted to a number of pounds via an equation used by Harvest Hope and Golden Harvest.

“I am inspired by competitive and passionate students, faculty and community members from Clemson and USC who together are determined to win the most important game: feeding the hungry,” said Golden Harvest Food Bank Executive Director Travis McNeal. “We can always unite to reach out a hand to those in need.”

In South Carolina, one in six South Carolina families struggles to find where the next meal will come from, and one in five children will go to bed hungry every night. By participating in the Palmetto Series Food Drive, Tiger and Gamecock fans alike will come together to fight the statewide battle of food insecurities and support Harvest Hope and Golden Harvest.

“Being an athlete at any university is so much more than the medal around your neck or the award hung up on your wall. It embodies being a role model, an active member in the community and, most importantly, giving back to the people that give so much to you, said Emily Radziwon of the Clemson Rowing team. “I have always wanted to use the platform I have as a student athlete to help change the status quo and the Palmetto Series Food Drive has helped me do just that. Let’s win as a community and help fight food insecurity together.”

USDA Names SC Directors of Farm Service Agency and Rural Development; Weathers Pleased with Appointments

COLUMBIA – U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue announced Friday the appointment of Boone Peeler to the Farm Service Agency (FSA) and Debbie Turbeville to Rural Development (RD), both as State Directors.   Peeler and Turbeville serve as appointees of President Donald J. Trump.

“Our goal is to help rural America prosper, and these state leaders will be of great assistance in that task,” Secretary Perdue said.

“Boone Peeler and Debbie Turbeville will be excellent representatives of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) in South Carolina,” SC Agriculture Commissioner Hugh Weathers said.  “They will play an important role in agricultural policy and economic development in our state, and I’m delighted with their appointments.”

Peeler is the Vice President of Harvey Peeler’s Farm, Inc. in Gaffney, SC and a member of the Gaffney city council since 2006.  He has worked at the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.

“Agribusiness is South Carolina’s largest industry, and I will work tirelessly for our farmers as the state’s FSA state director,” Boone said.  “I look forward to working with the USDA and Secretary Perdue and thank President Trump, our state Congressional delegation, and Commissioner Weathers for trusting me with this important position.”

Turbeville of Lake City is a career-long employee of the USDA Rural Development and has served in almost every role at the state level of the agency.   Most recently, she was the Area Director for Orangeburg/Aiken and surrounding counties.

“I am thrilled to put my 35 years of experience in Rural Development to work as State Director,” Turbeville said.  “Strengthening the economy in rural South Carolina is my passion, and I appreciate the support of Commissioner Weathers for the opportunity to represent the USDA in this capacity.”

FSA State Directors help implement USDA policies in planning, organizing, and administering FSA programs in their respective states. They are also responsible for running the day-to-day activities of the state FSA office.  RD State Directors work to help improve the economy and quality of life in rural America.

Country Christmas Celebration Returns to State Farmers Market

COLUMBIA – The State Farmers Market will take you back in time at the Country Christmas Celebration on Sunday, November 26 from 1 pm – 5 pm.  The south certified shed will be transformed into a winter wonderland where you can shop a variety of Christmas trees to the find the perfect one for your home.

While at the event, get a close up look at an assortment of antique tractors and catch the tractor parade at 4 pm. Children can also make and take home Christmas crafts while you listen to festive music and enjoy holiday treats from food vendors. SCDA to Host Certified SC Grown Tailgate for Palmetto Series Rivalry Football Game

COLUMBIA – The South Carolina Department of Agriculture (SCDA) invites Carolina and Clemson fans to the annual Certified SC Grown Tailgate at Gamecock Village on Saturday, November 25 from 3 – 7 p.m. ahead of the Palmetto Series football match-up.

“Whether you’re cheering for the Gamecocks or the Tigers, we can all agree on supporting our local farms and farmers,” said Commissioner Hugh Weathers. “The Certified SC Grown Tailgate is a great opportunity to show Carolina and Clemson fans alike how to incorporate local products and produce into their tailgate experience.”

The tailgating event will start four hours prior to kick-off, and feature a home-grown, local menu representing farmers across the state. Other event highlights include a corn-hole tournament between Cocky and the Tiger, a prize-wheel with Certified SC Grown giveaways and more before the Gamecocks and the Tigers face-off in Williams-Brice Stadium for the chance to earn another Palmetto Series point. The current score is 5:2, Gamecocks.

Throughout the year, as the two universities compete head-to-head, each earns points, with the winner earning bragging rights and the coveted Palmetto Series Trophy. The University of South Carolina has won the last two years.

The Palmetto Series was created using the full schedule of athletic events between Carolina and Clemson and includes football, baseball and volleyball and men and women’s soccer, cross country, golf, basketball and tennis. Points are also awarded for highest team GPA and for the Palmetto Series Food Drive tackling hunger in their communities. The Food Drive point will be announced during the Carolina vs. Clemson football game.

Launched in 2015, the Palmetto Series fosters a fun competition between the historic rivals while connecting fans with farmers and to the food grown in South Carolina.

Department of Agriculture Selects Hemp Growers, 20 farmers to begin pilot program

COLUMBIA – The South Carolina Department of Agriculture (SCDA) has selected 20 farmers to participate in the 2018 SC Industrial Hemp Pilot Program. The famers represent 15 South Carolina counties.

“The Industrial Hemp Pilot Program creates a new opportunity for South Carolina farmers to increase crop diversity,” said Hugh Weathers, South Carolina Commissioner of Agriculture. “Interest in the program was strong, and the Department of Agriculture worked diligently to select a broad representation of growers.”

The 20 permit recipients were chosen from 131 applications. Selection was based on several key factors, including:

• Completed application
• Agriculture experience
• Geographic balance across South Carolina
• Accredited college/university partner
• Purpose of the crop
• Processor experience and location
• Ability to secure needed equipment and financing

Five accredited universities will work with pilot program participants: University of South Carolina, Medical University of South Carolina, South Carolina State University, Clemson University and USC Beaufort.

Governor Henry McMaster signed H.3559 into law in May, making it legal for 20 South Carolina farmers to grow up to 20 acres of industrial hemp in 2018 for research purposes, in accordance with the 2014 Farm Bill.

“This is a new industry for South Carolina, and we’re hopeful that these first 20 growers will lay a strong foundation for an expanded 2019 program,” said Weathers. “Ultimately it’s about growth and expansion for our farmers and our economy.”

Household Hazardous Materials and Pesticide Collection to be Held in York

YORK, SC – The South Carolina Department of Agriculture (SCDA) and York County will hold a household hazardous materials and pesticide collection on Sat., March 3 from 8:00 am to 12:00 noon at the York County Public Works facility, 220 Public Works Road (off Highway 5) near the Moss Justice Center in York.

The collection is for residents only; products from businesses will not be accepted.  The household materials collection is open only to residents of York County.  Collection of unwanted and unused pesticides is open to residents of any SC county.  Additional details include:

• Quantities will be limited to 2500 pounds of solid and 300 gallons of liquid at no charge.
• Acceptable products include herbicides, nematicides, fungicides, leftover cleaners, chemicals, fertilizers, pool chemicals, oil-based paint, turpentine, paint thinner, mineral spirits, brake fluid, and gas/oil mix and other similar products used in agriculture production or around the home.
• Prohibited items include empty pesticide containers, infectious, biological or radioactive materials, explosives, and major appliances.
• A hazardous material company will be on site to properly dispose of the materials collected.
• Materials should be transported to the collection event in sturdy boxes with newspaper stuffed between the containers to prevent spills.
• Leave items in the original containers.
• Workers will be on hand to unload vehicles, and citizens will be asked to stay in the car.
• Collection events may be cancelled due to inclement weather and will be posted on SCDA’s website (www.agriculture.sc.gov).  Possible makeup dates will be announced at a later date.

SC Department of Agriculture Launches Agribusiness Entrepreneurship Center
Applications available for funding and mentoring

COLUMBIA – Are you an agribusiness entrepreneur who would benefit from mentoring, funding and access to investors? The Agribusiness Center for Research and Entrepreneurship (ACRE), a new initiative of the South Carolina Department of Agriculture (SCDA), is looking for you. Applications for the ACRE Entrepreneurship Program are open to South Carolina residents who have an agribusiness product and/or company related to one or more of the following categories:

• Specialty crops (fruits and vegetables, tree nuts, dried fruits, horticulture, nursery crops)
• Protein
• Other foods (honey, cheese, milk, eggs, etc.)
• Row crops
• Aquaculture
• Timber
• Mechanical harvesting
• Agribusiness technology

“We’re seeking the most innovative and forward thinkers in South Carolina agribusiness,” said Jack Shuler, ACRE Executive Director. “The Entrepreneurship Program will help position companies and products in the marketplace through collaboration, networking and funding.” The ACRE Entrepreneurship Program is for agribusiness entrepreneurs who, with the assistance of mentors and/or investors, are ready to take their products or processes to the market. “Ultimately the ACRE Entrepreneurship Center is about South Carolina’s economic prosperity and specifically, growing the economic impact of the state’s largest industry – agribusiness,” said SC Commissioner of Agriculture Hugh Weathers. “ACRE will link farming, agribusiness, research and entrepreneurship and will help us achieve our 50 by 20 goal.” South Carolina agribusiness has an annual economic impact of $42 billion. SCDA hopes to increase that impact to $50 billion by 2020.

The Entrepreneurship Program application requires a business plan and a prototype or sales history for the applicant’s company or product. Applications are due Monday, April 16 and are available at www.acre-sc.com. Applicants selected to participate in the Entrepreneurship Program could receive up to $25,000 for their company or product and/or access to a network of mentors, grant writing consultants and investors. ACRE will add a second Entrepreneurship Program track in late 2018 for beginning innovators who have an innovative agribusiness idea but don’t have experience in business. This track will offer participants a curriculum in business plan and marketing plan development. Specialty Crop Block Grant Applications Being Accepted

COLUMBIA – Applications for the USDA Specialty Crop Block Grant Program (SCBGP) are available at www.scspecialtycropblockgrant.com and are due by 5 p.m. on Friday, April 20.  The application must be completed online.

“The SCBGP is an important resource for strengthening the specialty crop industry,” said SC Commissioner of Agriculture Hugh Weathers.  “I encourage specialty crop farmers, researchers and other industry supporters to propose projects that enhance the competitiveness of specialty crops, sustain the livelihood of farmers, and strengthen local economies.”

Applicants should propose projects that provide one or more of the following benefits:

• Enhanced food safety
• Improved capacity of all entities in the specialty crop distribution chain to comply with the requirements of the Food Safety Modernization Act, for example, developing  “Good Agricultural Practices”, “Good Handling Practices”, “Good Manufacturing Practices”, and in cost-share arrangements for funding audits of such systems for small farmers, packers and processors
• Investment in specialty crop research, including research to focus on conservation and environmental outcomes
• Development of new and improved seed varieties and specialty crops
• Enhanced pest and disease control

Proposed projects:

• must fall within the criteria as described in the application
• can be up to three years in duration
• must benefit groups of producers, not individuals.
• must not use funds for capital expenditures such as buildings, equipment, or land.

The Specialty Crop Block Grant Program is administered by the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service. The program is committed to help strengthen the market for specialty crops. Specialty crops are defined as fruits, vegetables, tree nuts, dried fruits, horticulture (including honey), and nursery crops (including floriculture).

Commissioner’s Cup BBQ Cook-off and Festival Returns to State Farmers Market

COLUMBIA – The 7^th annual Commissioner’s Cup BBQ Cook-off and Festival, one of the midlands most anticipated events of the year, returns to the State Farmers Market Saturday, March 24 from 11 am- 3 pm.

Sanctioned by the Southern Barbecue Network, the cook-off will feature over 40 teams from across the southeast competing for the State Champion title and other top prizes. The public is invited to enjoy live music by Going Commando Band on the South Carolina Farm Bureau music stage, an antique tractor exhibit, children’s activities, and a variety of BBQ samples, while supplies last. There will also be food trucks on site selling BBQ plates, sweet treats, and beverages.

“We are looking forward to another successful cook-off and festival,” said Hugh Weathers, SC Commissioner of Agriculture. “This event brings in around 3,500 visitors to the State Farmers Market and is an excellent opportunity to showcase all the market has to offer.”

Admission for the event is $5 per person. Children 12 and under get in free with three canned goods for Harvest Hope Food Bank. Boxes will be on site during the festival for additional canned good donations.

State Barbecue Champion Named at Commissioner’s Cup BBQ Cook- off and Festival

COLUMBIA – The 7th annual Commissioner’s Cup BBQ Cook-off and Festival named a new State Barbecue Champion on Saturday, March 24. The South Carolina Department of Agriculture hosted this competition at the State Farmers Market, where 30 cook teams competed for the Grand Champion title.

2018 Winners and awards:

Reserve Champion ($300): Ultimate Tailgaters BBQ- Chris Fulmer, Aiken, SC

Come Shop the Midlands Spring Plant & Flower Festival

COLUMBIA – The South Carolina Department of Agriculture (SCDA) is hosting the annual Midlands Spring Plant & Flower Festival on April 12-15 at the State Farmers Market, located at 3483 Charleston Highway, West Columbia, SC.

The spring season is in full force in South Carolina and the beautiful weather has everyone excited about being outdoors. At the Midlands Spring Plant & Flower Festival, individuals can shop over 85 vendors offering an assortment of plants, flowers, outdoor furniture, lawn and garden décor, specialty items and more. A variety of local food trucks will be on-site so festival attendees can grab a bite to eat while shopping.

The festival will take place rain or shine. Admission for the event is free. Festival hours are 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. Thursday – Saturday and 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Sunday. Wagons will be available for rent, but visitors are encouraged to bring their own due to a limited quantity. Ridge Spring Waste Pesticide Collection Event Set

COLUMBIA – The South Carolina Department of Agriculture (SCDA) is offeringouth Carolina residents the opportunity to safely dispose of outdated, unusable or unwanted pesticides.  The event will take place on Tuesday, April 24 from 9:00am to 3:00pm behind the office of Ridge Spring Farmers Mutual, 901 West Main Street in Ridge Spring.

The pesticide and chemical collection program is open to all private, commercial and non-commercial pesticide applicators in the state, as well as homeowners.  SCDA staff will be on site to monitor pesticide collection and disposal, and will have final authority on acceptance of products.

• Chemical and pesticide quantities accepted will be limited to 2500 pounds of solid and 300 gallons of liquid at no charge.
• Pesticide products accepted include herbicides, insecticides, nematicides, fungicides and similar products used in agricultural production or around the home.
• Rinsate will not be accepted.
• Fertilizer will not be accepted unless it is combined or co-packed with a pesticide such as weed and feed.
• No compressed gas cylinders (metal cylinder with a valve) or empty pesticide containers will be collected.
• Collection events may be cancelled due to inclement weather and will be posted on SCDA’s website (www.agriculture.sc.gov).  Possible makeup dates will be announced at a later date.

Lexington and Richland Waste Pesticide Collection Events Set

COLUMBIA – The South Carolina Department of Agriculture (SCDA) is partnering with Lexington and Richland Counties to offer South Carolina residents the opportunity to safely dispose of outdated, unusable or unwanted pesticides.

The Lexington County event will take place on Saturday, April 28 from 9:00am to 1:00pm in the main parking lot of White Knoll High School, 5643 Platt Springs Road.

The Richland County event will take place on Saturday, May 12, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the South Carolina State Fairgrounds.  Enter from Gate 12 on Rosewood Drive.

The pesticide and chemical program is open to residents and farmers from any SC County. SCDA staff will be on site to monitor pesticide collection and disposal, and will have final authority on acceptance of products.

Spring Plant & Flower Festival Returns to Pee Dee State Farmers Market

FLORENCE, S.C. – Spring is here and it’s time to get your lawns and gardens ready for the season.  Come shop the 33^rd annual Spring Plant & Flower Festival April 19-22 at the Pee Dee State Farmers Market.

A vast selection of spring plants and flowers will be available, as well as other lawn and garden décor items.  The Florence County Master Gardeners will be on hand to answer questions and offer free gardening advice during the festival. Vendors will also be selling a variety of Certified SC Products and food trucks will be on site to grab a bite to eat.
